Herbst Theatre - San Francisco War Memorial

Event Summary:

The Grand Master of Japan's Omotesenke school, which has a 450-year history, will be holding a tea ceremony at the Herbst Theatre in San Francisco. This will be the first time the ceremony will be held at this venue, which is where the United Nations was founded. The purpose of the ceremony is to invoke world peace. Originally, kencha ceremonies are held to offer tea to Shinto gods or Buddhist deities, but it has evolved into a ceremony that transcends religion and will be held this time to wish for peace and happiness for all humankind.

For Peace and Harmony on Earth

The tradition of the study of the Japanese tea ceremony, referred to as Chanoyu, is deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Japan.  Chanoyu bears strong ritualistic connections with the Zen sect of Buddhism and the Shinto religion of Japan.  The connection between the Way of Tea and these religious sects can be seen in the Kencha ceremony.

Kencha originated as a ritualistic offering of tea to a religious deity, or a memorial offering.  The nature of the offering itself is one of gratitude, specifically towards figures of the past to whom the we are indebted in the present.  While Chanoyu does not necessarily have religious objectives, it does intersect the ecclesiastical Zen and Shinto traditions of worship through this expression of thanks.

There are types of tea ceremonies, such as Kucha, that memorialize individuals from the past through offerings.  Kencha is of the highest rank of these ceremonies as the offering of gratitude is made to deities or to important figures of the past.  Given the prestigious nature of the Kencha offering, the presentation is usually reserved for the headmaster and members of his family or direct disciples.

From Executive Chair, 50 th Anniversary Steering Committee

On June 15, 2024, Omotesenke Domonkai Northern California Region will celebrate the 50th anniversary of our founding. We invite you to attend the opening ceremony of this important milestone.

With its headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, Omotesenke is one of the three main schools of the Japanese tea ceremony, and among the oldest Japanese tea ceremony schools in Japan. Omotesenke Domonkai Northern California Region in San Francisco shares Japanese culture and history through the teaching of chanoyu, the 450-year-old Japanese tea ceremony. From its beginnings with a small group of tea practitioners, the organization has grown to include a diverse membership of students and teachers within the community who enjoy the practice of tea.

More than three hundred tea enthusiasts will attend the opening ceremony conducted by the Iemoto, Grand Tea Master from Japan. Please consider joining us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Omotesenke Domonkai Northern California Region.

Sincerely,

Marc Goto
